The various attractions located on Montage Mountain have become a staple not only for tourists but for locals as well. As the area began to develop, so did an issue with traffic congestion. The primary solution to the problem was to create the Montage Mountain exit off of Route 81. However, the latest course only offered a temporary resolve as new venues continued moving in.
In late September 2008, bids were accepted for the reorganization of a section of Montage Mountain Road that will alleviate much of the crowding. A quarter mile segment of the road will be widened from two lanes to five; matching the existing portion from the 81 northbound exit to Davis Street.
With the preliminary phases scheduled to being in March 2009, Leeward will have the task of completing this project on a tight schedule while maintaining communication with the surrounding communities and authorities to control traffic during the baseball and concert seasons.
The project consists of: building up and compacting subbase materials to create the widening surface, installing a new stormwater drainage system, trenching and placing electrical conduit for an existing and future traffic signalization. Final phases will involve paving of the work zone, roadway markings and replacing guiderail. Overall, the project will require 2,874 linear feet of pipe, 4,336 ton of asphalt, and nearly 24,750 linear feet of road markings.
Project closeouts are scheduled for July 2009, at which time all of the lanes of traffic will be operational and if all goes accordingly, traveling along Montage Mountain road during the peak entertainment season will be pleasantly shorter.
